He was stationed for six months in Egypt, where he and his friends took trips to Tel Aviv to patronize prostitutes, he told investigators. The occasional candy bar. One of those friends told us she remembers Keyes talking to Julie at the pool where she often swam. ISRAEL KEYES: I decided I was going to look for a house with a couple in it. They found it, based on Keyes' directions. His biggest concern was that the details of his crimes would become public in the media. During this time, Keyes resolved to act on his fantasies of killing strangers, he told the investigators. When it hit the papers, [about Keyes confessing in Anchorage to being serial killer], everybody was going like, Wow, I cant believe it, Lovik said. As they began to question him, Keyes told investigators that the Koenig murder was one of many. That wasn't her character. "My whole issue is to keep control of it," Keyes told them. Despite the intrigue surrounding Julie Harris, Keyes claims his first attempt at murder came in 1997 or 1998, when he abducted and sexually assaulted a young woman near Bend, Oregon. Keyes also told investigators in Alaska that he killed four people in Washington, but names and details were lacking, according to an FBI news release. The FBI revealed those drawings and other never before seen evidence to "48 Hours," including examples of Keyes' "kill caches" kits containing guns, zip ties and other items he would bury across the United States years in advance, in anticipation of committing a crime. Keyes' family, the FBI later determined, knew nothing about the horrors that had just taken place. Frank Russo: Once we heard what he had to say, it went from being a very happy day as a prosecutor to one of the worst I've ever had. Jolene Goeden: I think this is the entirety of of his crimes.
